Review
If cinema is of 24 FPS, then Bombay Rose is a tribute to each of these frames. Directed & written by Gitanjali Rao, Bombay Rose was released on Netflix on International Women’s Day, 2021. Each frame of the film is painted using digital brushes and veers between different art styles and time periods to create a living and breathing continuum of Indian Cinema. The shapes and values of colour, paints a modern-day Mumbai as an impressionistic cityscape with blurry backdrops and sharpens focus only on the characters moving the story forward. Symbolization and morphing have been excellently used in this animation. The red colour scheme dominates the screen expressing the passion of love. Music and scores are seamlessly synchronised with the visuals to truly teleport the viewers to a nostalgic rumination. The movie is exceptionally lovely and a delight to the eyes but airless and blotted with scraps of narration that barely hold together.
